The main purpose of the paper is to consider the respective orientations of ethnomethodology and activity theory to work and its objects, with reference to a particular case of working practice. The focus of this paper is on that aspect of engineering work that comprises the production of exhibits and plans, and the place of computer-aided design tools and paper-based drawings as mediators of that form of engineering practice.
