Interconnected The idea of a social rhetoric has been bubbling round my head. I'll outline my thinking first, and defend it next.

* Groups act in a way that is more than the sum of the individuals.
* There is communication going on at a group level, a social language.
* Given the paths of spoken language are hardwired into the brain, maybe social language is too.
* We need to develop a social rhetoric to harness and direct this social language.

Groups act in a way that is more than the sum of the individuals. Now you can invoke emergence and say that the behaviour of the group is nothing more than the interactions of individual behaviour, aggregated and displaying properties we couldn't have predicted. Firstly, that's indistinguishable from true group behaviour. But more importantly, second, that's too reductionist for my taste -- groups need to work well together, there's evolutionary pressure for this, and nature will make use of anything that's around. Watching a group making a seemingly logical decision is massively different to a single person or even two people. Anyway, if groups were simple enough to study as the addition of individuals we'd still need to look at individual-to-group communication, we'd still need to make abstractions because the number of one-to-one relationships increases massively as the group expands, and we'de still be exploring a new area. Groups are different.

There is communication going on at a group level, a social language. We know there's non-verbal communication going on, and from there it's the same argument as above: non-verbal communication with a number of people is different enough from one-to-one that we can label it "social language" and move on. But ultimately, it feels right that there's something special going on here. It's a whole other ballgame speaking in a group where pheromones, many-to-many gestures, body language, feedback loops, group think, social pressures come into play.

Edge 59 As for her discussion of memes, however, I wonder exactly how her notion that "BETWEEN groups there's a motivation to reject the memes of the other group and do something different" really plays itself out. If the meme is 'strong' enough, the new group adopts it. Their pride simply forces them to rename or recontextualize the meme to make it *seem* original.

'The Tyranny of Structurelessness' by Jo Freeman During the years in which the women's liberation movement has been taking shape, a great emphasis has been placed on what are called leaderless, structureless groups as the main form of the movement. The source of this idea was a natural reaction against the overstructured society in which most of us found ourselves, the inevitable control this gave others over our lives, and the continual elitism of the Left and similar groups among those who were supposedly fighting this over-structuredness.

The idea of 'structurelessness', however, has moved from a healthy counter to these tendencies to becoming a goddess in its own right. The idea is as little examined as the term is much used, but it has become an intrinsic and unquestioned part of women's liberation ideology. For the early development of the movement this did not much matter. It early defined its main method as consciousness-raising, and the 'structureless rap group' was an excellent means to this end. Its looseness and informality encouraged participation in discussion and the often supportive atmosphere elicited personal insight. If nothing more concrete than personal insight ever resulted from these groups, that did not much matter, because their purpose did not really extend beyond this.

Uglow's book reveals how simplistic our view of groups really is. We divide them into cults and clubs, and dismiss the former for their insularity and the latter for their banality. The cult is the place where, cut off from your peers, you become crazy. The club is the place where, surrounded by your peers, you become boring. Yet if you can combine the best of those two states—the right kind of insularity with the right kind of homogeneity—you create an environment both safe enough and stimulating enough to make great thoughts possible. You get Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel, and a revolution in Western philosophy. You get Darwin, Watt, Wedgwood, and Priestley, and the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. And sometimes, on a more modest level, you get a bunch of people goofing around and bringing a new kind of comedy to network television.

computers and the evolution continued changes in computer technologies and
learning will bring. In fact, if we as a field tie ourselves only to
studying and writing about and trying to understand only the latest thing to
ooze from the broadband, we might just evolve ourselves out of being, and
break apart, into those new niches Bill identified.

Sidebars: Inside Out One of the reasons that learning objects are so difficult to define is that they can be virtually anything. Any stand-alone chunk of information capable of teaching something can be a learning object. Examples include a chapter in a book, a map, a graphic, an interactive application, a video, a wiring diagram, a simulation, and so on. As well as being any thing, a learning object can be any size. While some organizations, such as CISCO Systems Inc., have precise rules for what constitutes a learning object or an information object, definitions across the field of education as a whole remain quite loose. What might be considered a complete learning object by one educator, might just be a component of a learning object to another. In current practice, a learning object might teach a single idea or it might cluster several concepts to deliver a more substantial chunk of learning. While there many interpretations, most educators would agree that learning objects have the following characteristics

* Smaller units of learning: Learning objects usually comprise a smaller unit of learning than a course, typically ranging from two to 15 minutes.
* Self contained: Each learning object is self-contained and can be used independently of other learning objects.
* Reusable: Learning objects are reusable. The same learning object can be used in multiple contexts for multiple purposes.
* Can be aggregated: Learning objects can be grouped into larger collections of content to create more substantial units of learning.
* Tagged with metadata: All learning objects are tagged with metadata that describes the lear

Replacing Water Heaters A vital part of your water heater installation is a temperature and pressure relief valve and relief line. The relief system lets off excess heat and pressure automatically (Fig. 9).

Most likely sediment has built up around the valve. Try flushing it out. Place a bucket under the blow down tube from the valve. Quickly open and close the valve a couple of times to clean it out. If it still leaks replace the valve. You should also clean out the tank itself, to get rid of sediment. Shut off the water supply to the heater. Turn the temperature control to low and the on-off to "pilot". Connect a hose to the drain valve at the bottom and run the hose outside or to a drain. Drain the tank down and then open the water supply to force the sediment out. Close the drain, refill the tank, and reset the controls to normal. There is a good article in the current issue of This Old House magazine about water heater maintenance.

Are the movies better? Not noticably.



Is the picture quality better than at home? No.



Is the sound quality better than at home? Sometimes...it's hit and miss, and depends on where you sit in the theater.



Are there jackasses with laser pointers sitting in my bedroom hoping to fuck up my movie experience? No, not usually...and if they are, I'm allowed to beat them to death with a crowbar.



The point is, if the experience is more pleasant elsewhere, the proper course is _not_ to try and stop the consumer from enjoying that other, more pleasant experience...it's to attempt to compete accordingly.

So far, no country has the educational system which the knowledge society needs. No country has tackled the major demands. No one knows the "the answers"; no one can do what is needed. But we can at least ask the questions. We can define - albeit in rough outline the specifications for schooling and for schools which might answer to the realities of the post-capitalist society, the knowledge society.
Here are the new specifications:
The school we need has to provide universal literacy of high order - well beyond what "literacy" means today.
It has to imbue students on all levels and of all age with a motivation to learn and with the discipline of continuing learning.
It has to be an open system, accessible both to highly educated people and to people who for whatever reason did not gain access to advanced education in their early years.
It has to impart knowledge both as substance and as process - what the Germans differentiate as Wissen and Können.
Finally, schooling can no longer be a monopoly of the schools. Education in the post-capitalist society has to permeate the entire society. Employing organizations of all kinds - businesses, government agencies, non-profits - must become institutions of learning and teaching as well. Schools, increasingly, must work in partnership with employers and employing organizations.

All this for a book that shows a great deal of talent and ambition but remains every inch a first novel. A murder without the mystery, "The Secret History" is about a coterie of college students fanatically devoted to the study of ancient Greek. Halfway through the novel the group murders one of its own, and from then on the book is concerned with the ramifications of their deed, especially the psychological consequences. This could have been a successful page-turner if only the characters were compelling, but they are the weakest element. It's impossible to distinguish one student from another without continually flipping back to the page where Tartt introduces them. She adorns them with quirks, but none has a personality; and her amateur's device of keeping them constantly drunk or on drugs gets tedious fast. Unlike the truly startling debuts of recent years, such as Mona Simpson's "Anywhere But Here," or Jonathan Franzen's "The Twenty-Seventh City"-highly sophisticated achievements both technically and emotionally--"The Secret History" feels strained and pretentious, as if Tartt were determined to Write a Novel, rather than eager to tell a story.

Lightest of the Light Linux Hey, all, just to put this in context, I've been collecting some very old Itronix Mil-Spec laptops recently (one survived being thrown full-strength by me, a 285 pound ex-marine, from seven feet onto worn-out carpet over plywood, and booted up no problem) because I have a fetish for such things. Let's just say I have a thing for durability. The only problem is, the laptops have a "full environmental seal" which means no cd-rom, no internal floppy, no usb ports, etc. They only have a parallel and serial port, a phone jack, and a PCMCIA port protected with a cast aluminum door and a gasket. My weaker ones have eight MB of ram each and are only 486DX2-50's, with a 260MB HDD. My three stronger ones are Pentium 133's with 32MB of ram each, and about a 1.3 GB disk, with monochrome LCDs. Only one has color, but that one's just a 640x480 LCD. I wanted to run Linux, and not some quirky, doofy ancient Linux either. Here's how I got it to work.



Step 1. I have an external floppy that connects to the PCMCIA slot, and a parallel port zipdrive. So, I downloaded Zipslack (available on the Slackware website) and the companion, fourmeg.zip, which creates a swap file. Zipslack is interesting because it creates a UMSDOS slackware installation on a zipdisk (just unzip it to the zipdisk). This can then be booted from the zipslack boot floppy (boot from the boot floppy, then direct root at /dev/sda4, i.e. the zipdisk). Zipslack booted with only minor difficulties -- I had to tweak a couple of BIOS settings, that's all.

DIY: Local TV and the Satellite Dish The best solution for off-air reception, in a suburban environment where outside antennas are restricted, is to mount a small outdoor VHF-UHF antenna (such as the Radio Shack VU-110) in the attic space of your home and run the cable (RG-6 coax) to the TV set. Orienting the antenna for best reception will give you access to all channels VHF and UHF (not to mention FM radio). Since the whole unit is completely out of the weather, it could last as long as your house, and for around $50, results will be far superior to set-top rabbit ears. In areas where restrictions are minimal, mounting an antenna outside and controlling it with a rotator (RS#15-1225, $65) will allow you to tune in signals from several distant cities in different directions. Investing in a much larger antenna will allow you to expand your horizons to over 100 miles. But, there's a limit. Single, amplified antennas 15 or 20 feet above the peak of your house will be unlikely to get usable signals beyond 100 miles.

(1) Pick an issue. You need an issue that the profession as a whole is not really thinking about, but which is going to be the center of attention in five years. The issue could be technical, strategic, managerial, policy-related, or all of the above. It could be a problem or an opportunity or both. It could be a new method or a whole new area of practice. Utah Politics - The Salt Lake Tribune Gov. Mike Leavitt says he will not sign off on a permit for a Tooele County radioactive-waste landfill to accept "hotter," more dangerous radioactive waste.

And, in a separate move, Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, said he would introduce legislation to raise taxes on the landfill, operated by Envirocare of Utah, if Initiative 1 fails in Tuesday's election.

Bramble and Leavitt have publicly announced their opposition to the initiative. And both announced their pledges just days before voters statewide will be asked to decide on the Radioactive Waste Restrictions Act, a citizens initiative that would hike taxes on Envirocare and kill its plans to accept higher-level, "B&C" radioactive waste.

Envirocare already has passed the state Division of Radiation Control's safety and environmental tests. To expand into the lucrative business of disposing "B&C" waste -- which includes most nuclear plant waste, but not spent fuel rods -- the company also needs approval from the Legislature and the governor.

I got a bamboo plant from the Red Butte Garden fall plant sale in Salt Lake City about four years ago. (I don't know the type.) It's now two stories high! So far we have not had luck with transplants. But at least I can tell you that certain types of bamboo grow really well in Utah! Also, it has not spread, weed-like, as some people told me it would do.

The bamboos below are all good choices for screens or privacy fencing. Some only get to about 6 feet high while others can reach over 40 feet. Most of these grow very dense and have limbs and leaves down close to the ground providing a high degree of privacy. Several are very cold hardy.

Similar in size to the form, this is a probably my favorite bamboo. Culms are buttery yellow with occasional green stripes. This is a beautiful bamboo that quickly reaches a large size.
