Through an interrogation of the social spaces of play, creativity, imagination and innovation, my doctoral project assesses current biotechnological, military and artistic applications of intelligent fibres and interactive fabrics. Current applications include bio-prosthetics and artificial organs, as well as adaptive clothing and woven building materials. My research focusses on the social, spatial and performative dimensions of artificial intelligence, genetic engineering and nanotechnology and their application to new textile technologies. My doctoral project investigates how social and cultural theory may contribute to the understanding and design of ubiquitous computing, and the place of social ethics and accountability in new technologies.
