Napster is a system like a democracy or a market, where it is the selfish impulses of the individual users that drive the system. As long as the architecture is built in such a way that it channels enough of those selfish users to provide resources, it doesn't matter whether or not it is "from each according to their hard drive, to each according to their bandwidth."
