* Groups act in a way that is more than the sum of the individuals.
* There is communication going on at a group level, a social language.
* Given the paths of spoken language are hardwired into the brain, maybe social language is too.
* We need to develop a social rhetoric to harness and direct this social language.
Groups act in a way that is more than the sum of the individuals. Now you can invoke emergence and say that the behaviour of the group is nothing more than the interactions of individual behaviour, aggregated and displaying properties we couldn't have predicted. Firstly, that's indistinguishable from true group behaviour. But more importantly, second, that's too reductionist for my taste -- groups need to work well together, there's evolutionary pressure for this, and nature will make use of anything that's around. Watching a group making a seemingly logical decision is massively different to a single person or even two people. Anyway, if groups were simple enough to study as the addition of individuals we'd still need to look at individual-to-group communication, we'd still need to make abstractions because the number of one-to-one relationships increases massively as the group expands, and we'de still be exploring a new area. Groups are different.
There is communication going on at a group level, a social language. We know there's non-verbal communication going on, and from there it's the same argument as above: non-verbal communication with a number of people is different enough from one-to-one that we can label it "social language" and move on. But ultimately, it feels right that there's something special going on here. It's a whole other ballgame speaking in a group where pheromones, many-to-many gestures, body language, feedback loops, group think, social pressures come into play.

The idea of 'structurelessness', however, has moved from a healthy counter to these tendencies to becoming a goddess in its own right. The idea is as little examined as the term is much used, but it has become an intrinsic and unquestioned part of women's liberation ideology. For the early development of the movement this did not much matter. It early defined its main method as consciousness-raising, and the 'structureless rap group' was an excellent means to this end. Its looseness and informality encouraged participation in discussion and the often supportive atmosphere elicited personal insight. If nothing more concrete than personal insight ever resulted from these groups, that did not much matter, because their purpose did not really extend beyond this.

Uglow's book reveals how simplistic our view of groups really is. We divide them into cults and clubs, and dismiss the former for their insularity and the latter for their banality. The cult is the place where, cut off from your peers, you become crazy. The club is the place where, surrounded by your peers, you become boring. Yet if you can combine the best of those two states—the right kind of insularity with the right kind of homogeneity—you create an environment both safe enough and stimulating enough to make great thoughts possible. You get Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel, and a revolution in Western philosophy. You get Darwin, Watt, Wedgwood, and Priestley, and the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. And sometimes, on a more modest level, you get a bunch of people goofing around and bringing a new kind of comedy to network television.

Flexibility Through Online Learning
Summary of research (in PDF format) obtained by Australia's
Flexible Learning Advisory Group FLAG). The study reports
that most students who experience online learning do so as
part of a program delivered by mixed mode. It suggests that
online learning likely to be more expensive than
conventional approaches, but is also likely to deliver
better learning outcomes and levels of learner
satisfaction. In particular, learners value the convenience
and freedom of online learning. Students also value
opportunities to communicate and interact with teachers.

I got a letter yesterday from WBUR, my local NPR station, asking me to give money. On the envelope, in big green letters, it says, "The Year When the News Really Mattered..."
This makes me wonder what my donation was supporting last year. I don't remember the envelope reading, "The Year When Scott Simon Snorted Coke Off Linda Wertheimer's Stomach..." but I'll admit that my memory's not that great.

"Surprisingly, even Mr. Wagenberg believes that secret video has gone too far. "I definitely feel undercover has been overused," he said during a rare interview here, where he was rigging courtrooms with the nearly invisible robotics that capture real legal conflict for NBC's "Crime & Punishment." The interview took place on the condition that he not be directly photographed or described, since he often goes undercover to plant his devices.

Trouble shooting, water heater will not fire up.. Replaced thermocoupler and will not stay lit''. Please, help !
You have a bad gas valve!
If the pilot light will light but does not stay lit when the gas valve control is released the problem could be a defective thermocouple or perhaps a loose thermocouple connection to the gas control valve. Make sure the thermocouple connection to the control valve is tight.
By using Tinderbox as an application to "glue" different, knowledge-rich information sources together, I've created a system that allows me to easily discover, purchase, track, annotate, relate, and search my important books in a "just-in-time" fashion. With the addition of WiFi and/or GPRS access to the 'net, I can do this just about anywhere, anytime. Without any programming on my part or expensive, proprietary systems, I can cart around a significant chunk of my reference library, along with the equivalent of a reference librarian.
If the culture of the organization is such that misspellings and poor
grammar are going to brand an otherwise smart and creative person as
below standard, the organization has some deep-seated problems. Of
course a spell checker would help. But when offering these
opportunities to converse online, the organization needs to frame them
with encouragement. Part of the social contract must be to not penalize
people as if it was English Composition 101. The emphasis should be on
exchange of knowledge and ideas. Everyone should strive for brevity
and relevance. It should be explained that with time and experience,
the online conversational skills will develop.

The tendency I have observed is that doctors today will cite non-specific
ailments like athsma and prescribe inhalers rather than prescribe antibiotics
due to their overuse in recent years. In reality, I think I had pneumonia,
which is legitimately treated with antibiotics, but not helped by the use of
inhalers.
History has shown gamers that online protest can result in positive change, as exemplified in Ultima Online's 1997 naked riot demanding bug fixes and server upgrades. Not only were some of the rioters' issues addressed by the game publisher following the incident, but the event was widely reported, and gamers worldwide have been inspired to acts of virtual civil disobedience ever since.
There once was rich lady, Lily,

The records show that Kennedy variously took codeine, Demerol and methadone for pain; Ritalin, a stimulant; meprobamate and librium for anxiety; barbiturates for sleep; thyroid hormone; and injections of a blood derivative, gamma globulin, presumably to combat infections.
In the White House , Kennedy received "seven to eight injections of procaine in his back in the same sitting" before news conferences and other events, Kelman said.
The president suffered pain from three fractured vertebrae from osteoporosis.
The other graduate students who attend your defense will often bet on which professors read your thesis. Be prepared to determine the winner (note that it is not considered sporting to participate in this game yourself).
Try to set a defense date early so as to give your committee ample time to schedule conferences, vacations, and/or elective surgery for that day.
Ph.D. dissertations (e.g., Schulman 1995a; Cox 1995) are commonly believed to be comprehensive compendiums of the original research done by a graduate student in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.² In reality, the Ph.D. thesis is usually a number of disparate chapters whose most important feature is not the thoroughness of the experimental description but rather the width of the margins. In this paper, the second article in a series on scientific writing that began with Schulman (1996a), we will discuss the phenomenon of the Ph.D. thesis.

I guess my question would be: What has the movie industry (studios, theatres, etc...) done in recent years to make it more appealing for me to go to the movies?
Are the prices lower? No, they're much higher (in my area, at least) than inflation would account for.
Are there fewer advertisements? No, as the story yesterday pointed out, there are many more.
Are the movies better? Not noticably.
Is the picture quality better than at home? No.
Is the sound quality better than at home? Sometimes...it's hit and miss, and depends on where you sit in the theater.
Are there jackasses with laser pointers sitting in my bedroom hoping to fuck up my movie experience? No, not usually...and if they are, I'm allowed to beat them to death with a crowbar.
The point is, if the experience is more pleasant elsewhere, the proper course is _not_ to try and stop the consumer from enjoying that other, more pleasant experience...it's to attempt to compete accordingly.

So far, no country has the educational system which the knowledge society needs. No country has tackled the major demands. No one knows the "the answers"; no one can do what is needed. But we can at least ask the questions. We can define - albeit in rough outline the specifications for schooling and for schools which might answer to the realities of the post-capitalist society, the knowledge society.
Here are the new specifications:
The school we need has to provide universal literacy of high order - well beyond what "literacy" means today.
It has to imbue students on all levels and of all age with a motivation to learn and with the discipline of continuing learning.
It has to be an open system, accessible both to highly educated people and to people who for whatever reason did not gain access to advanced education in their early years.
It has to impart knowledge both as substance and as process - what the Germans differentiate as Wissen and Können.
Finally, schooling can no longer be a monopoly of the schools. Education in the post-capitalist society has to permeate the entire society. Employing organizations of all kinds - businesses, government agencies, non-profits - must become institutions of learning and teaching as well. Schools, increasingly, must work in partnership with employers and employing organizations.

In times of adversity, you learn who your friends are. You guys need a lot of friends. You need friends in all walks of life. Pretty soon, you are going to graduate from the status of techie geeks to official dissidents. This is your fate. People are wasting time on dissident relics like Noam Chomsky. Professor Chomsky is a pretty good dissident: he's persistent, he means what he says, and he's certainly very courageous, but this is the 21st century, and Stallman is a bigger deal. Lawrence Lessig is a bigger deal.
What's the real price you pay for free software? The real price you pay is having to bow the knee to the weird organizational model and the freaky, geeky social values that prop that up. If you're the user, you have to hang out with Linux freaks.
Yet Another Guy in Audience: And buy us beer!
That is the price. You pay a price in attention and respect, and hours and hours and hours of selfless devotion. You keep feebly hoping that something will actually work right out of the box, and maybe even look nice. But then you get stuff like Gnome, KDE and Eazel... They just don't like to do the boring stuff for the stupid people! That's just not in the job description! It's not even a job. That's the secret.
"Don't like it? Hey, just reconfigure it yourself, don't bother me!" It's the Hippie Squat Model of software architecture. "If I want to paint the doors and floors bright blue and put the toilet right into the kitchen, why not?"
It's very offensive to user sensibilities and it is as ugly as a sack full of penguin guts. But, you know, that is a vital systemic advantage. Because that catches the eye of the committed crusader. It actually brings people in who will stay and work hard for no money.
It's like life in a refugee camp. If you want Doctors Without Borders to show up, you don't want to have yourself any kind of really nice refugee camp. With some flowers, and a safe place for old ladies to knit. You want that inferno of starvation and disease that looks really good on CNN. Because if you actually organized a refugee camp, then you'd have stuff like taxes and gas and electricity and police protection, as opposed to what one gets in squatters' camps, which is, incessant internal quarrels. Because there's never just one gang trying to run the anarchy. You get bitter quarrels, between Free Software and Open Source, between the Stallman hero-model and alternative business.

All this for a book that shows a great deal of talent and ambition but remains every inch a first novel. A murder without the mystery, "The Secret History" is about a coterie of college students fanatically devoted to the study of ancient Greek. Halfway through the novel the group murders one of its own, and from then on the book is concerned with the ramifications of their deed, especially the psychological consequences. This could have been a successful page-turner if only the characters were compelling, but they are the weakest element. It's impossible to distinguish one student from another without continually flipping back to the page where Tartt introduces them. She adorns them with quirks, but none has a personality; and her amateur's device of keeping them constantly drunk or on drugs gets tedious fast. Unlike the truly startling debuts of recent years, such as Mona Simpson's "Anywhere But Here," or Jonathan Franzen's "The Twenty-Seventh City"-highly sophisticated achievements both technically and emotionally--"The Secret History" feels strained and pretentious, as if Tartt were determined to Write a Novel, rather than eager to tell a story.
Donna Tartt doesn't have time to talk. She's too busy writing. But where's the evidence? It's been seven years since her first novel, The Secret History, became one of those rare best-sellers that actually has literary merit - and nought but a couple of flaccid short stories have dribbled out since. Her cautionary tale of highbrow murder set in the dead of winter against the thinly disguised backdrop of Vermont's exclusive Bennington College (where Tartt is an alum), charmed crusty book critics, while drawing in the John Grisham set. Since then, though, the author seems to have fallen off the literary map.
The Secret History claims to provide explanations and additions that the author could not insert into his work on the Wars for fear of retribution from Justinian and Theodora. Since both before and afterward, Procopius wrote approvingly of the emperor, it was suggested in the past that he was not the author of the work, but it is now generally accepted that Procopius wrote it. Analysis of text, which show no contradictions in point of fact between the Secret History and the other works, as well a linguistic and grammatical analysis makes this a conclusive opinion.
as rick says, you "must have a problem to solve", "reward participation", "define what you're looking for" and "ensure senior participation". and that's just for starters. otherwise it's blank stares and business-as-usual.

Rove stepped in to stop the bleeding. Sources tell Time he leaned on executives to support the corporate accounting reforms written by Democratic Senator Paul Sarbanes. Three weeks later, he orchestrated the President's economic summit in Waco, Texas, which amounted to little more than a photo op for ceos but gave the impression that Bush was focused on the economy. The Justice Department, urged on by G.O.P. political consultants, made several high-profile arrests of corporate chiefs, complete with handcuffs. In August Rove kept his boss traveling during his vacation and talking about the economy.

Step 1. I have an external floppy that connects to the PCMCIA slot, and a parallel port zipdrive. So, I downloaded Zipslack (available on the Slackware website) and the companion, fourmeg.zip, which creates a swap file. Zipslack is interesting because it creates a UMSDOS slackware installation on a zipdisk (just unzip it to the zipdisk). This can then be booted from the zipslack boot floppy (boot from the boot floppy, then direct root at /dev/sda4, i.e. the zipdisk). Zipslack booted with only minor difficulties -- I had to tweak a couple of BIOS settings, that's all.

(1) Pick an issue. You need an issue that the profession as a whole is not really thinking about, but which is going to be the center of attention in five years. The issue could be technical, strategic, managerial, policy-related, or all of the above. It could be a problem or an opportunity or both. It could be a new method or a whole new area of practice. It should be fairly specific, though, and should directly address the day-to-day work of people in some segment of the profession. "Technology" is too big. You can find an issue in several ways:

When I was a teenager growing up on Long Island, one of my favorite excursions
was a trip to see the great Gilded Age mansions of the North Shore. Those
mansions weren't just pieces of architectural history. They were monuments to
a bygone social era, one in which the rich could afford the armies of servants
needed to maintain a house the size of a European palace. By the time I saw
them, of course, that era was long past. Almost none of the Long Island
mansions were still private residences. Those that hadn't been turned into
museums were occupied by nursing homes or private schools
We are now living in a new Gilded Age, as extravagant as the original.
Mansions have made a comeback. Back in 1999 this magazine profiled Thierry
Despont, the ''eminence of excess,'' an architect who specializes in designing
houses for the superrich. His creations typically range from 20,000 to 60,000
square feet; houses at the upper end of his range are not much smaller than
the White House. Needless to say, the armies of servants are back, too. So are
the yachts. Still, even J.P. Morgan didn't have a Gulfstream.

I sometimes get letters from people who write and draw like Kurt Cobain. I put them in a file marked 'Loonies', just in case they try to sue me in the future for stealing their ideas.

Even more disappointing than the people I just mentioned, are the people who claim they are not voting to "make a statement about not voting." That's like inventing an ideological view to justify the purchase of adult diapers when you're just too lazy to walk to a g*d damned toilet. If you're so serious about making a statement, how about going to the poll, retrieving your ballot, and walking it (un-punched) over to the ballot box?

Disclosure of the meetings in October in Washington - confirmed by an INC spokesman - comes as Lord Browne, the head of BP, has warned that British oil companies have been squeezed out of post-war Iraq even before the first shot has been fired in any US-led land invasion.
Mozilla, the open source browser, is one project that could benefit from faculty input. Open-sourcers actually implement features. Sometimes Mozilla seems like an ever receding dream, especially when I try to install cool plugins like "composite" that let one control text within browser formboxes and it doesn't work. Yet, like many, I've adopted a deterministic stance towards all of this, telling myself that eventually the bugs will get worked out. and everything will word.

What is procmail?
Oh, my, let's talk. =^ ) What procmail does is filter email, that's all it does, and it is incredibly powerful. It can do pattern matching, weighted scoring, blacklist lookups, re-write headers, and pipe its output to other programs for further processing. There are effective spam protection services written entirely in procmail and updated on a regular basis (i.e. www.spambouncer.org). If that's not enough, when configured just so, procmail can do fun email bouncing tricks. Nothing like it exists in the Windoze or Macintosh world. You need it. Let's get started.
"JOE is the professional freeware ASCII text screen editor for UNIX. It makes full use of the power and versatility of UNIX, but lacks the steep learning curve and basic nonsense you have to deal with in every other UNIX editor. JOE has the feel of most IBM PC text editors: The key-sequences are reminiscent of WordStar and Turbo-C. JOE is much more powerful than those editors, however. JOE has all of the features a UNIX user should expect: full use of termcap/terminfo, excellent screen update optimizations (JOE is fully useable at 2400 baud), simple installation, and all of the UNIX-integration features of VI."

Quickly tie ideas together. That is what Idea Knot does. With it you write documents that contain ideas written quickly at the instant inspiration hits you. You then organize these ideas together into relevant groups. Finally, when you have more time, you can edit those ideas until they are complete.
With its fully aqua compliant interface, chartConstructor allows you to build Gantt and PERT charts in minutes. Once created, these charts can be printed or exported as image files for inclusion in other documents, or on the web.

Our next stop on the tour is to look at aliases. An alias lets you define that mail to an address actually gets sent to somebody else. That other person might be a user on the local machine or might be an email address on a completely different system.
I think Utah sounds wonderful. Wonderful because you can actually consider buying a house in the Avenues - it won't cost $480,000 unless it has six bedrooms (not uncommon in Utah). Wonderful because no one drives an Audi TT and complains about how down she is because her Daddy can't get her a newer one. Wonderful because generic cola comes in 3-liter bottles. Wonderful because I once bought an apple green cashmere coat at the DI for $8 (Utah has the best vintage). My husband and I are designers in Venice who are actively marketing to overseas clients, so that we can move to Utah without anyone noticing. (I think we will go to Logan.) Neither of us are LDS. He has lived there before, and I love it there. Besides, nowhere else is it so easy to be an "individual".
Think about your story a lot.? In bed before sleeping, in the morning when you awake.? In traffic.? Out jogging.? Walking.? It?s more fun than thinking about your personal problems and the state of the world at large!
Sketch both in words and drawings.? It helps to draw diagrams of your story, or even sketches of scenes.? Generally you should always take the time to draw a floor plan of a room that your characters are in.? It doesn?t have to be beautiful, but doing it is a way of focusing your mind and making the scene real.
In the meantime, I've developed a diabolical phrase to scare Republicans: Hillary Clinton in '04.
Slopthrop's Third Proverb for Paranoids:
If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers.
"In paranoid thinking a person believes he has detected a conspiracy--that is,
a hidden (and malevolent) pattern in the behavior of friends, associates or governments--where in fact no such pattern exists. If there is such a
conspiracy, the subject may be profoundly anxious, but his thinking is not necessarily paranoid. A famous case involves James Forrestal, the first U.S. Secretary of of Defense. At the end of World War II, Forrestal was convinced that Israeli secret agents were following him everywhere. His physicians, equally convinced of his idee fixe, diagnosed him as paranoid and confined him to an upper storey of Walter Reed Army Hospital, from which he plunged to his death , partly because of inadequate supervision by hospital personnel, overly deferential to to one of his exalted rank.
Later it was discovered that Forrestal was indeed being followed by Israeli agents who were worried that he might reach a secret understanding with representatives of Arab nations. Forrestal had other problems, but having his valid perception labeled paranoid did not help his condition.
In times of rapid social change there are bound to be conspiracies, both by those in favor of change and by those defending the status quo, the latter more than the former in recent American political history. Detecting conspiracies when there are no conspiracies is a symptom of paranoia; detecting them when they exist is a sign of mental health.

The story - in brief - is that there have been numerous changes of the theses subjects, writing and rewriting again and again; attempts to get published in various journals; changes of supervisors and referees; internecine struggles between different institutions of science; political pressures applied from various directions, and other dramatic events that - if fully chronicled - would make a great movie! (Daniel has promised to write a short summary of the essential points that we will present as soon as it arrives.)
The sociological milieu of the affair is rich in color and personalities. The Bogdanovs have been described as "charismatic" and and "persuasive." One of the juicier details is that the Bogdanov twins actually have FANS - scores of beautiful, nubile young women - who attend their seminars thereby delighting the other physicists - distracting them from theoretical to applied pysics. The Bogdanovs have political cachet - even the support of the French Minister of education. In addition to this, because of their prominence, the Bogdanov brothers have brought various publishing houses into the fray, making for a general circus-like atmosphere in the normally subdued and monkly Ivory towers of science.

Smart Mobs are packet-switched. Howard's book teases this out admirably. Packet-switched means that you're not reliable, you're not in control, you're not deterministic. Victorians of a certain bent adopted a fatalistic view of the universe as an utterly predictable billiard-table whose balls were set in motion by the Supreme First Mover. Smart Mobs live in an evolutionary hothouse that has more in common with the randomwalking properties of colony animals than with the military discipline of yestercenturies revolutions, cartels and governments.
Newsweek 23/04/01. 'The brain is an astonishing 60% fat and it needs Omega-3's to function properly. In a number of recent studies around the world a significant link has been established between Omega-3 deficit with high rates of mood problems and depression, bi-polar disorder, post natal depression and even suicidal tendencies.' Research conducted by Dr Donald Rudin has found that Flax Seed Oil supplements benefited almost 2/3rds of subjects studied with a reduction in anxiety, stress and tension,
And, in a separate move, Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, said he would introduce legislation to raise taxes on the landfill, operated by Envirocare of Utah, if Initiative 1 fails in Tuesday's election.
Bramble and Leavitt have publicly announced their opposition to the initiative. And both announced their pledges just days before voters statewide will be asked to decide on the Radioactive Waste Restrictions Act, a citizens initiative that would hike taxes on Envirocare and kill its plans to accept higher-level, "B&C" radioactive waste.
Envirocare already has passed the state Division of Radiation Control's safety and environmental tests. To expand into the lucrative business of disposing "B&C" waste -- which includes most nuclear plant waste, but not spent fuel rods -- the company also needs approval from the Legislature and the governor.

Things To Consider Before Starting A Reading Group/Book Club. Questions To Ask Before Joining A Reading Group.
There are no right or wrong answers to these questions. At the end of the day, all it takes to start a book group is to get 2 or more people together and start talking about a book. However, having answers to these questions will give you the best chance of creating a happy and cohesive book club that enjoys meeting to discuss, and disagree about, books - an environment where new friendships can be made and existing ones can be strengthened.
The ideal number of participants
The ideal size for a lively discussion is around six to ten people, assuming that it is a highly participative group. When deciding how many members to include in your group, however, you must take into account other factors, such as hectic schedules, unanticipated conflicts, or varying interest in topics chosen. Such factors will mean that, often, 3 or 4 people may be unable to attend a given meeting. Hence, the best strategy is to have enough people join the group so that at each meeting you are assured approximately 6 to 8 participants. Consider having a total membership of 10 to 12 to insure optimum attendance at every meeting. (Within a company, you may choose to make the group larger, or have more than one group. If you do choose to have more than one group, you might consider focusing each on a topic or topics of mutual concern, such as teams, customer service, leadership, performance, etc.).

Laurie,
I got a bamboo plant from the Red Butte Garden fall plant sale in Salt Lake City about four years ago. (I don't know the type.) It's now two stories high! So far we have not had luck with transplants. But at least I can tell you that certain types of bamboo grow really well in Utah! Also, it has not spread, weed-like, as some people told me it would do.
The bamboos below are all good choices for screens or privacy fencing. Some only get to about 6 feet high while others can reach over 40 feet. Most of these grow very dense and have limbs and leaves down close to the ground providing a high degree of privacy. Several are very cold hardy.
One of the best bamboos for construction
P.v. 'Robert Young' - ROBERT YOUNG BAMBOO
Max. size 3.5" x 45' Hardy to -5F Sun/Part Shade
Similar in size to the form, this is a probably my favorite bamboo. Culms are buttery yellow with occasional green stripes. This is a beautiful bamboo that quickly reaches a large size.
Our bamboo nursery is located on 20 acres in north central Alabama (USDA zone 7b). We grow and sell cold hardy bamboo
After five years, the six five-gallon containers of giant timber bamboo (Bambusa oldhamii) spaced six feet apart had shot up 30 feet. Today, they form a lush 60-foot-tall privacy fence and a dark-green backdrop for the rest of her elegant garden. "The canes and leaves are pretty, and the sound of the wind rustling through them is wonderful," Spitz says. "It’s so much better to have an animated fence than an unchanging block wall."
